Punta Cana International Airport (IATA: PUJ, ICAO: MDPC) is the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic and one of the busiest in the Caribbean, handling over 7 million passengers annually. Located in the eastern tip of the island, it serves as the primary gateway to the famous Punta Cana resort region.
What makes PUJ unique is that it is a privately owned and operated airport, built and managed by the Puntacana Group. The airport features a distinctive open-air terminal design with thatched-roof (cana) structures that reflect the tropical character of the destination.
Opened in 1984 with a single runway, the airport has grown dramatically to accommodate the explosion of tourism in the Punta Cana, Bávaro, and Cap Cana areas. It now has two runways and multiple terminal buildings capable of handling simultaneous wide-body aircraft operations from North America, South America, and Europe.
Punta Cana Airport features a unique open-air design with multiple terminal buildings spread across the property. The tropical architecture uses thatched palm (cana) roofs and open-air walkways.
The main international terminal handling the majority of flights from the United States, Canada, and Europe. Features modern check-in counters, duty-free shopping, and multiple departure gates with jet bridges.
Handles additional international flights, particularly charter operations and seasonal routes. Similar open-air design with full passenger amenities.
A separate facility for private jets and charter flights, offering VIP services, private lounges, and expedited customs processing.
PUJ handles a high volume of passengers, particularly during peak season (December through April). Planning ahead can save significant time.
Security lines at PUJ can be lengthy during peak departure times, particularly between 1 PM and 5 PM when many resort checkout flights depart. Standard international security protocols apply:
Recommended arrival: 3.5 hours before international flights during peak season (December–April), 3 hours during other months.
Immigration and customs procedures at PUJ follow Dominican Republic national standards, with efficient processing to handle the high passenger volume.
Complete the E-Ticket departure form online before arriving at the airport. Pass through emigration control after security screening. Departure tax is included in your airline ticket price.
Tip: During peak season, immigration lines on arrival can take 30-60 minutes. Have your documents ready to speed up processing.
Punta Cana Airport is centrally located within the resort zone, making transfers to most hotels relatively short and straightforward.
Despite its open-air design, PUJ offers comprehensive traveler amenities across its terminal buildings.
PUJ is one of the best-connected airports in the Caribbean, served by major airlines from across the globe. The airport handles a large number of charter flights in addition to scheduled service.
Punta Cana is a resort destination, and these tips will help ensure a smooth airport experience:
