Cibao International Airport (IATA: STI, ICAO: MDST) serves Santiago de los Caballeros, the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic and the economic capital of the fertile Cibao Valley. Located approximately 15 kilometers southeast of the city center in the municipality of Licey al Medio, the airport handles over 1.5 million passengers annually.
Opened in 2002, STI replaced the older Santiago Municipal Airport and was designed to serve the rapidly growing Cibao region. The airport is an important gateway for the large Dominican diaspora community in the northeastern United States, with heavy traffic to and from New York, New Jersey, and Boston.
The Cibao region is the agricultural heartland of the Dominican Republic and a major center for tobacco, rum, and chocolate production. Business travelers and those visiting family make up a significant portion of the passenger mix, alongside tourists exploring the interior highlands and adventure destinations.
Cibao International Airport has a modern single-terminal building designed to handle its current passenger volume efficiently.
The terminal is compact and easy to navigate. Total walking distance from check-in to the farthest gate is manageable in under 10 minutes. The airport has approximately 8 gates, adequate for its current traffic.
The terminal was renovated in recent years with updated interiors, improved air conditioning, and expanded gate areas to improve the passenger experience.
As a smaller airport, STI generally offers a faster and more relaxed check-in and security experience compared to SDQ or PUJ.
Recommended arrival: 2.5–3 hours before international flights, 1.5–2 hours before domestic flights.
Standard Dominican Republic immigration and customs procedures apply at STI.
Since many passengers at STI are Dominican nationals or regular visitors, the immigration staff is accustomed to a mix of tourist and resident traffic, and processing tends to be efficient.
The airport is conveniently located near Santiago and provides access to the broader Cibao region.
STI is a modern, mid-sized airport with essential traveler amenities:
STI primarily serves routes to the United States, particularly cities with large Dominican communities.
The route network reflects the strong diaspora connections between the Cibao region and the US East Coast. Flight frequency increases during holiday periods, particularly around Christmas, Easter, and Dominican Independence Day.
