Eight kilometers of untouched paradise inside Jaragua National Park
Bahia de las Aguilas ("Bay of the Eagles") is widely considered the most pristine beach in the entire Dominican Republic. This remote 8-kilometer stretch of brilliant white sand in the far southwest sits within the Jaragua National Park, protected from any development.
The beach is virtually untouched -- no hotels, no restaurants, no buildings of any kind. Just pure, powder-fine sand meeting crystal-clear turquoise water against a backdrop of dry desert hills and cactus. The remoteness is the point: this is nature at its most unspoiled.
Getting here requires effort, but every traveler who makes the journey considers it among the most memorable beach experiences of their lives.

The water at Bahia de las Aguilas is remarkably clear, with visibility exceeding 30 meters on calm days. The bay is partially sheltered, creating calm to gentle wave conditions. The sandy bottom slopes gradually, allowing safe swimming for all levels.
Snorkeling is excellent along the rocky edges where the bay meets the cliffs. Marine life includes tropical fish, sea turtles, and sometimes dolphins offshore. The water temperature is warm year-round at 27-29 degrees Celsius.
There are absolutely no facilities, lifeguards, or emergency services. Come prepared and swim with a buddy.
Bahia de las Aguilas is remote. The nearest town is Pedernales, about 30 minutes away by boat:
From Santo Domingo, Pedernales is about 5-6 hours by car via Barahona. From Barahona, it is about 2-3 hours. National park entrance fee: RD$100 per person.
Best from December to April when the weather is driest. The southwest is the driest region of the DR, so rain is rare year-round. However, summer heat (June-August) can be extreme with no shade available.
Weekdays are completely deserted. Weekends may see a few other boats. Plan to arrive early and leave by mid-afternoon to avoid the hottest hours.
This is a bucket-list beach that requires planning but delivers an unmatched experience.
Many Dominicans and travel experts consider Bahía de las Águilas the finest beach in the country. The 8 km stretch of pristine white sand is almost completely undeveloped, with crystal-clear turquoise water and no buildings in sight. Its remote location in Jaragua National Park has preserved it in near-perfect condition, making it unlike any other beach in the Caribbean.
Most visitors reach Bahía de las Águilas by boat from Cabo Rojo, a 15-20 minute ride. Local fishermen offer round-trip boat service and will pick you up at an agreed time. You can also hike or drive a rough coastal track, but the boat is the easiest and most scenic option. Cabo Rojo is about 20 km south of Pedernales.
There are virtually no facilities at Bahía de las Águilas. No restaurants, no shade structures, no restrooms, and no fresh water. You must bring everything you need for the day including food, water, sunscreen, shade, and trash bags to pack out your waste. This total lack of development is exactly what makes the beach so extraordinary.
As part of Jaragua National Park, there is a park entrance fee of approximately 100-200 Dominican pesos per person. This is usually paid at the park checkpoint near Cabo Rojo. The boat ride from Cabo Rojo is a separate cost, typically around 1,500-2,500 pesos per boat round trip, which can be split among passengers.
The dry season from December to April offers the best weather conditions. Visit early in the day to enjoy the calmest water and most comfortable temperatures. The beach faces south and gets full sun, so midday heat can be intense. Avoid the area during heavy rain periods as the access roads can become difficult and boat service may be suspended.
