Red-cliffed gateway to the country's most remote coastline
Cabo Rojo is a rugged, windswept beach in the far southwest near Pedernales. Known for its red-tinged cliffs (hence "Red Cape"), the beach offers dramatic landscapes where arid desert hills meet the turquoise Caribbean Sea. It serves as the departure point for boat trips to nearby Bahia de las Aguilas.
How Cabo Rojo Beach shifts through the year. Each bar's height is the sea temperature, and the teal bars mark the best months for a beach day. Water temperature shows in °F by default; switch to °C with the toggle.
Best time to visit: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Nov, Dec. The sea stays warm year-round; these months pair calm water with the lightest crowds and lowest sargassum risk.

About 15 minutes south of Pedernales on a paved road. From Barahona, approximately 2.5 hours by car. From Santo Domingo, 5-6 hours. The boat dock for Bahia de las Aguilas is at La Cueva, near Cabo Rojo.
Best December to April. The area is hot and dry year-round. Usually visited as a transit point to Bahia de las Aguilas.
Cabo Rojo is primarily known as the departure point for boat trips to Bahía de las Águilas. However, the beach at Cabo Rojo is worth spending time on in its own right. It has reddish-tinged sand from the nearby bauxite deposits, clear water, and very few visitors. Some travelers spend a half day at Cabo Rojo before or after their Bahía trip.
Local fishermen at Cabo Rojo offer boat rides to Bahía de las Águilas and will negotiate a price for the round trip. Typical costs range from 1,500-2,500 Dominican pesos per boat. Establish the pickup time clearly before your captain departs. Some small tour agencies in Pedernales also organize trips with all logistics included.
A couple of very basic food stalls and small restaurants serve meals near the Cabo Rojo boat launch area. Options are limited, so it is wise to bring your own food and water, especially if you plan to spend most of the day at Bahía de las Águilas where there is nothing available. Pedernales, about 20 km north, has more dining options.
