Towering marble cliffs and world-class snorkeling at the edge of the peninsula
Playa Fronton is one of the most dramatic beaches in the Dominican Republic, hidden at the base of a massive 90-meter limestone cliff. Accessible only by boat or jungle hike from Las Galeras, this small crescent of white sand with crystal-clear water and world-class snorkeling is a true adventure destination.
How Playa Fronton shifts through the year. Each bar's height is the sea temperature, and the teal bars mark the best months for a beach day. Water temperature shows in °F by default; switch to °C with the toggle.
Best time to visit: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Nov, Dec. The sea stays warm year-round; these months pair calm water with the lightest crowds and lowest sargassum risk.

Exceptionally clear water with visibility exceeding 25 meters. Partially sheltered by the cliff and offshore reef. The reef hosts sea turtles, rays, barracuda, and colorful reef fish -- considered the best snorkeling on the peninsula. Some current during northerly swells. No lifeguards.
From Las Galeras only:
Best from February to June with calm seas and high visibility. Boat access may be limited during winter storms. Early morning arrivals are best.
Playa Frontón is only accessible by boat from Las Galeras, a 15-20 minute ride, or by a challenging 45-minute hike over a mountain trail. Most visitors opt for the boat, which can be arranged with local fishermen in Las Galeras. The trail is steep and not well marked, so hiring a local guide is strongly recommended if hiking.
Playa Frontón is one of the best snorkeling spots on the Samaná Peninsula. The clear water and rocky cliffs create habitats for diverse marine life, including colorful reef fish, sea urchins, and occasional sea turtles. Bring your own snorkeling gear as there are no rental facilities at the beach. The underwater scenery along the cliff base is particularly impressive.
There are no facilities, shade structures, or vendors at Playa Frontón, so bring everything you need including water, food, sunscreen, and snorkeling gear. The dramatic limestone cliff that towers over the beach creates a stunning backdrop but provides limited natural shade. Arrange your return boat time in advance, as there is no cell service to call for pickup.
The water at Playa Frontón can have waves and some current, so it is better suited for confident swimmers. The beach drops off more quickly than some others in the area. Snorkeling close to the cliff walls is popular but requires comfort in the water. There are no lifeguards, so exercise caution and never swim alone.
