Parque Nacional Sierra de Neiba protects a long, narrow mountain range running along the Dominican-Haitian border, north of the Enriquillo Valley. Rising to 2,279 meters at its highest point, the Sierra de Neiba is one of the least-explored mountain ranges in the Dominican Republic, offering genuine wilderness for those willing to make the effort to reach it.
The park covers 278 square kilometers and protects significant stands of Hispaniolan pine forest at higher elevations, transitioning to cloud forest and broadleaf humid forest on the wetter northern slopes. The range is an important water source for the communities of the Enriquillo Valley below. Bird diversity is high, with endemic species including the Hispaniolan trogon, La Selle Thrush, and several restricted-range warblers. The remote location and lack of tourist infrastructure mean that visits require planning and local guides, but the reward is pristine nature and complete solitude.
