The Dominican Alps — frost, pines, and mountain meadows
A high-altitude park in the Cordillera Central known as the "Dominican Alps," with pine forests, cloud forests, and frost-covered meadows above 2,200 meters.
Parque Nacional Valle Nuevo is often called the "Dominican Alps" — a high-altitude plateau and mountain landscape in the heart of the Cordillera Central that offers a nature experience unique in the Caribbean. At elevations averaging 2,200 meters, the park features pine-forested ridges, frost-covered meadows, mountain streams, and temperatures that regularly drop below freezing at night — a far cry from the tropical beaches most visitors associate with the Dominican Republic.
Covering 910 square kilometers, Valle Nuevo is one of the country's largest protected areas and plays a critical role in water supply — its rivers and streams feed agricultural systems that produce much of the nation's food. The park is accessible from the mountain town of Constanza, itself one of the highest and coolest towns in the Caribbean, and can be crossed via the paved Constanza-San Jose de Ocoa road, offering roadside access to several attractions.
Valle Nuevo offers several notable natural and cultural attractions:
