Reserva Cientifica Ebano Verde is a 23 square kilometer scientific reserve in the Cordillera Central, established specifically to protect the critically endangered Magnolia pallescens (green ebony) — a rare tree species found only in a few locations on Hispaniola. The reserve encompasses pristine cloud forest and broadleaf mountain forest at elevations of 800-1,565 meters, making it one of the most important botanical sites in the Caribbean.
The cloud forest environment is magical — ancient trees draped in mosses, epiphytes, and orchids; tree ferns rising from the understory; and a constant mist that creates an ethereal atmosphere. The reserve harbors an exceptional diversity of orchids (over 80 species), ferns, bromeliads, and endemic plants. Bird diversity is outstanding, with endemic species including the Hispaniolan trogon, narrow-billed tody, and several warblers. The reserve has well-maintained trails and a small research station, and serves as an important outdoor classroom for Dominican environmental education.
