Accessible cloud forest in the northern mountains
A highland scientific reserve in the Cordillera Septentrional protecting cloud forest, endemic species, and critical watersheds for the Cibao Valley.
Reserva Cientifica Loma Quita Espuela protects 72 square kilometers of subtropical humid forest and cloud forest in the Cordillera Septentrional, the mountain range that runs along the northern coast. Rising to 985 meters at its summit, the reserve is an important water catchment area, feeding rivers and streams that irrigate the fertile Cibao Valley — the agricultural heartland of the Dominican Republic.
The reserve is managed by the non-profit Sociedad Ecologica del Cibao and features well-maintained interpretive trails through dense forest. The vegetation ranges from subtropical humid forest at lower elevations to cloud forest at the summit, where trees are laden with epiphytes, orchids, and bromeliads. The reserve harbors populations of the Hispaniolan solenodon (one of the world's rarest mammals), hutias, the Hispaniolan boa, and numerous endemic bird species. It is an excellent, accessible option for visitors wanting to experience Dominican mountain forest without the demanding treks of the Cordillera Central.
