The Cayos Siete Hermanos (Seven Brothers Cays) are a chain of seven small, uninhabited islands scattered in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Montecristi in the far northwest of the Dominican Republic. These tiny islands are among the most untouched and pristine spots in the entire Caribbean β with no development, no facilities, and very few visitors.
Protected as part of the Montecristi National Park, the cays feature postcard-perfect white sand beaches, crystal-clear shallow waters, and thriving coral reef ecosystems. They are a haven for nesting sea turtles, seabirds, and an incredible diversity of marine life. For those willing to make the journey, these islands offer a Robinson Crusoe-like experience of Caribbean nature at its purest.
Each of the seven cays has its own character, though all share the same pristine, undeveloped beauty:
Reaching the Cayos Siete Hermanos requires some planning but is well worth the effort:
Important: Sea conditions can make the crossing rough. The calmest seas are typically December through April. Always check conditions before heading out.
Overnight stays are generally not permitted as the cays are part of a protected national park. Day trips are the standard way to visit. Arrange a boat pickup time and return to Montecristi the same day.
Bring everything: water (at least 2 liters per person), food, sunscreen, shade (umbrella or tent), snorkel gear, and trash bags. There are absolutely no facilities on any of the islands.
The best approach is to go to Montecristi and ask at the local port or your accommodation. Local fishermen regularly make the trip and can be hired for around $100-200 USD per group. Agree on pricing, which islands to visit, and pickup time before departing.
