The protected lagoon generally has flatter water thanks to protection from ocean swell. The water is shallow and warm with a sandy bottom. Primarily a wind sports beach -- swimming is possible in the early morning before the wind picks up, but this is not a relaxation swimming beach. Good snorkeling at the nearby reef when conditions allow.
Buen Hombre is about 3.5 hours northwest of Puerto Plata. The road is paved but the last section is unpaved and rough. A vehicle with good clearance is helpful. From Monte Cristi, it is about 45 minutes east. Very limited public transport -- rental car strongly recommended.
