Tropical forests, Taino caves, and the famous Isla Saona
A coastal national park protecting subtropical humid forests, limestone caves with Taino art, coral reefs, and the famous Isla Saona. One of the most visited parks in the country.
Parque Nacional del Este, officially renamed Parque Nacional Cotubinama in 2014 in honor of a Taino cacique, is one of the most visited national parks in the Dominican Republic. Covering 420 square kilometers of land and marine territory on the southeastern coast, the park protects subtropical humid forests, limestone caves with Taino art, mangroves, and extensive coral reef systems.
The park is dominated by two main attractions: the mainland forested area with its cave systems and trails, and the offshore Isla Saona — one of the most popular day trip destinations in the entire Caribbean. Together, they offer an accessible and diverse nature experience combining cultural history, forest exploration, beach relaxation, and marine wildlife. The park's waters are home to manatees, dolphins, and healthy coral reef ecosystems.
The mainland portion of Cotubinama offers several rewarding trail experiences:
All trails are maintained and relatively easy, though the forest paths can be muddy after rain. Guides are recommended for cave visits to ensure safety and to interpret the Taino artwork. The forest is home to hutias, rhinoceros iguanas, and numerous bird species.
