Hoyo Azul is one of the Dominican Republic's most spectacular natural formations — a luminous cenote nestled at the base of a towering 75-meter limestone cliff in the heart of Scape Park, Cap Cana. The name translates to "Blue Hole," and the mesmerizing turquoise-blue color of the water fully lives up to it.
Fed by an underground river filtered through limestone, the cenote maintains an almost otherworldly clarity. Sunlight streams through the jungle canopy above, illuminating the water and creating an effect that feels more like stepping into a fantasy movie than visiting a real place.
The experience begins with a guided walk through a lush tropical jungle trail. Your guide will point out local flora, towering trees, and the rich biodiversity of the area. After about 15-20 minutes of walking, the trail opens to reveal the cenote below.
Steps carved into the rock lead down to the water's edge, where you can swim in the refreshingly cool water (around 24°C). The cenote is about 14 meters deep in the center, and the water color shifts from emerald green near the edges to a deep, vivid blue in the middle.
