Best time to visit: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Nov, Dec. The sea stays warm year-round; these months pair calm water with the lightest crowds and lowest sargassum risk.

Playa Portillo is an excellent family beach with calm, shallow water and soft white sand. The protected conditions make it safer for young children than the more exposed beaches in Las Terrenas. A few resorts along the beach offer day-use facilities and activities. The relaxed atmosphere makes it a pleasant alternative to busier beach areas.
Playa Portillo is about 10 km east of Las Terrenas, approximately a 15-20 minute drive. The road is paved and scenic, following the coast through coconut groves. Taxis and motorbike taxis can make the trip easily. It is also close to El Catey Airport, about 15 minutes away.
A couple of resorts are located directly on Playa Portillo, including the Sublime Samaná hotel. The accommodation options are more limited than in Las Terrenas proper, which contributes to the quiet character of the beach. Staying here offers a more secluded experience while remaining within easy reach of Las Terrenas restaurants and nightlife.
