Sheltered bay with crystal-clear snorkeling and vibrant reef life
Sosua Beach (Playa Sosua) is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped cove on the north coast, protected by rocky headlands on both sides. The sheltered bay creates calm, clear water ideal for swimming and snorkeling, making it one of the most popular day-trip beaches on the north coast.
The beach is fronted by a lively strip of restaurants, bars, and vendors selling everything from souvenirs to fresh fruit. The multicultural town of Sosua has a fascinating history as a refuge for Jewish settlers fleeing Europe in the 1940s, and this heritage still enriches the community.
How Sosua Beach shifts through the year. Each bar's height is the sea temperature, and the teal bars mark the best months for a beach day. Water temperature shows in °F by default; switch to °C with the toggle.
Best time to visit: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Nov, Dec. The sea stays warm year-round; these months pair calm water with the lightest crowds and lowest sargassum risk.

The sheltered bay creates calm, almost pool-like conditions. Waves are minimal and the water is clear with visibility of 10-20 meters. The sandy bottom slopes gradually, making it excellent for families. Snorkeling is good along the rocky edges of the bay where tropical fish congregate.
Glass-bottom boat tours operate from the beach for RD$500-800 per person, touring the reef and marine life without getting wet.
Sosua is about 20 minutes east of Puerto Plata's Gregorio Luperon Airport (POP). Taxis from the airport cost RD$2,000-3,000 (USD $35-55). Guaguas from Puerto Plata run frequently for RD$75-100. From Cabarete, it is 15 minutes west.
The beach is reached by walking down a stairway from the main road. There is no direct vehicle access to the sand, so pack light.
Year-round beach thanks to the sheltered bay. December to April has the best weather. Weekdays are much less crowded than weekends. Arrive before 10 AM for the best chair spots and calmest water. Cruise ship days (when ships dock at nearby Puerto Plata) can bring crowds.
Sosúa Beach is one of the best snorkeling spots on the north coast. The protected bay has clear, calm water with coral formations and abundant tropical fish visible from shore. You can rent snorkeling gear from vendors on the beach for a few dollars. The rocky sides of the bay offer the most interesting underwater scenery.
The beach itself is generally safe during daytime hours with a consistent presence of vendors and visitors. As with any tourist area, watch your belongings and do not leave valuables unattended. The beach has a reputation for persistent vendors and occasional hassles, but politely declining is usually sufficient. The swimming conditions are calm and safe.
Numerous restaurants and bars line the cliffside path leading down to Sosúa Beach, and several vendors sell food and drinks directly on the sand. You can find fresh seafood, cold beer, and tropical cocktails without leaving the beach. The restaurants above the beach offer better views and a wider menu selection.
Sosúa is about 25 km east of Puerto Plata, roughly a 25-30 minute drive along the coastal highway. Public guaguas run frequently between the two towns and cost very little. Taxis are also readily available. From the main road in Sosúa, follow the pedestrian street down to the beach, which takes about 5 minutes on foot.
