Cabarete is the adventure sports capital of the Caribbean. This energetic beach town on the north coast is world-famous for kiteboarding, windsurfing, and surfing. The main beach curves along a lively bay lined with bars, restaurants, and hostels that cater to a young, international crowd.

Cabarete Bay has moderate waves and steady afternoon winds. The morning hours are calmer and best for swimming. After 11 AM, wind sports take over. The water is warm and the sandy bottom slopes gradually.
The eastern end of the bay is dedicated to kiteboarding, while the central area is better for swimming. Be aware of kiteboarders and stay in designated swimming zones. No formal lifeguards but lots of people around.
Cabarete is 15 minutes east of Sosua and about 25 minutes from Puerto Plata's Gregorio Luperon Airport (POP). Taxis from the airport cost RD$2,500-3,500 (USD $45-60). Guaguas from Puerto Plata run regularly for RD$100-150. Cabarete Tours runs shuttle services from Santo Domingo (about 3.5 hours).
