Catch waves at the Dominican Republic's premier surf break, with consistent swells and world-class reef breaks for all skill levels.
Playa Encuentro is the heart of Dominican surfing, located just west of Cabarete on the North Coast. The beach offers multiple reef breaks that produce consistent, rideable waves throughout the year, with the biggest swells arriving between October and April from North Atlantic storm systems.
The main breaks include La Izquierda, a left for intermediate and advanced surfers, and the main right-hand break, whose gentler inside section suits beginners while longer rides farther out suit more skilled surfers. Numerous surf schools operate on the beach, offering lessons for complete beginners through to advanced coaching. The mellow, laid-back surf culture and warm water (no wetsuit needed!) make this an ideal surf destination.
