Encuentro has multiple surf breaks over reef and sand bottom. Waves range from 0.5-2.5 meters depending on swell. The inside sections are suitable for beginners while the outside breaks challenge experienced surfers. Currents and reef hazards exist -- surf with a local or take a lesson if unfamiliar with the breaks.
Swimming is possible in the calmer channels between breaks but this is primarily a surf beach. Water shoes or reef boots recommended.
Playa Encuentro is about 5 minutes west of Cabarete on the main coastal road. Look for the surf school signs. Motoconchos from Cabarete cost RD$100-200. From Puerto Plata airport, about 20 minutes by taxi.
There is a parking area near the beach entrance. The path down to the beach descends a small cliff.
