Merengue meets the Atlantic on the North Coast
The Festival del Merengue de Puerto Plata is a music festival run by the city government (Ayuntamiento Municipal de Puerto Plata) on the seafront Malecon. It is not a decades-old, uninterrupted event. It was founded in 1984, went dormant for roughly 20 years, and was revived in July 2025 under Mayor Diomedes 'Roquelito' Roque Garcia.
The 2025 edition ran July 18 to 20, with preliminary activities on July 15 and 16, along the 'cuarto de milla' (quarter-mile) stretch of the Malecon near La Puntilla and Fort San Felipe. It featured more than 15 national merengue acts plus local Cibao Norte performers, food vendors and family programming.
Organizers have said they intend to hold it annually, but as of mid-2025 no 2026 dates had been announced. Confirm before you travel.
The festival traces to a directive on July 3, 1984 from Tourism Secretary Rafael Subervi Bonilla, who tasked Puerto Plata's provincial tourism director, Armando Rodriguez Pelegrin, with creating a cultural event for the city.
At a planning meeting on July 12, 1984 at the Playa Dorada Golf Club, the name was chosen over two other proposals, Festival del Ambar and Festival de Puerto Plata. The first edition launched in October 1984 on the Malecon, and early editions reportedly ran as long as nine days.
The event then lapsed for about two decades. At the 2025 relaunch, Mayor Roque Garcia noted publicly that some 20 years had passed since the city last lived the festival. The 2025 revival, organized by the Ayuntamiento with provincial government backing, was framed as the start of a renewed annual tradition.
Expect free open-air concerts along the waterfront promenade. The 2025 lineup featured more than 15 national merengue artists alongside local Cibao Norte performers, with evening shows the main draw.
Daytime and preliminary programming was reported to include film screenings, dance and Dominican music-history segments. Food and drink stands set up along the Malecon with typical Dominican festival fare. The backdrop takes in the Atlantic and Mount Isabel de Torres.
Crowd size for the 2025 edition was not given an official count. Treat any specific attendance figure you see in travel blogs as unverified promotional copy.
A few things worth planning around, since the festival's cadence is still being re-established after the revival:
The festival area sits near Fort San Felipe and is walkable to the cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, so it pairs well with other central Puerto Plata sights.
The festival is staged on the 'cuarto de milla' section of the Malecon in central Puerto Plata, near La Puntilla and Fort San Felipe.
Gregorio Luperon International Airport (POP) is roughly a 20 to 30 minute drive away and serves the North Coast resort strip. If you stay at a downtown hotel, the Malecon is walkable. From resorts in Playa Dorada, Costa Dorada or Sosua, plan on a taxi or rental car, roughly 15 to 40 minutes depending on location.
There is no dedicated festival shuttle. Use metered taxis, arrange transport through your hotel, or note that ride-hailing availability in Puerto Plata is limited. If you drive, expect street parking to fill up near the waterfront on concert nights.
