Punta Cana 5-Day Itinerary: Beach, Snorkeling & Saona Island (2026)

Land at Punta Cana International (PUJ), clear immigration (the tourist card is included in airfare issued outside the country) (budget 45 to 60 minutes), then meet your pre-booked transfer for the 25 minute ride to Bávaro. Check in, grab a welcome cocktail, and resist the urge to plan anything. You just spent hours on a plane.

Walk straight to the beach for your first barefoot hour on Bávaro's famous powdery sand. The water is bathtub warm and the shelf is shallow for a long way out, so it is ideal for a calm first swim. Rent a beach chair (free at most all-inclusives), order a Presidente, and let the trip start slow.

Sunset is around 6:15pm in winter. Head to Jellyfish Restaurant or Captain Cook for fresh grilled lobster, ceviche, and a toes-in-the-sand dinner. Both sit right on Bávaro Beach and take reservations. Back to the resort by 9:30pm; tomorrow is an early start.

Pickup from your resort is usually 7:00 to 7:30am. Expect a 90 minute transfer to Bayahíbe port on the south coast, a quick welcome drink, and boarding around 9:30am. The ride out is a party catamaran with merengue music, rum, and a 45 minute natural pool stop where you stand in waist-deep water while starfish drift around your feet. The pool water is clear and the sandbar is postcard material.

Arrival at Isla Saona is around 12:30pm. Lunch is a buffet of grilled chicken, rice, salad, and fresh fruit, served under palm trees on the beach. You get 2 to 3 hours of free time to swim, walk the shoreline, and take photos. Isla Saona Beach is the real reason you came: fine white sand, turquoise water, and no buildings in sight.

The return trip is usually on a speedboat (faster, 45 minutes) while the catamaran heads back empty. Back at the resort by 6:00pm. Tonight is low-key: dinner at your resort, shower off the salt and sunscreen, and get an early night.

Sleep in a little after yesterday. Grab a proper breakfast at the resort and leave by 9:30am for Scape Park in Cap Cana (15 to 25 minutes by taxi, $20 to $30 each way). Reach it by crossing a suspension bridge and hiking through the park; the water is cool, clean, and photogenic.

Back at the resort by 1:30pm. This is your first real unstructured afternoon: long lunch, a float in the pool, or a walk down Bávaro to Arena Gorda Beach, one of the longest stretches of uninterrupted sand in the area. If you still have energy, book a 60 minute couples massage at the resort spa ($80 to $150 per person).

Dinner at Citrus Restaurant (modern Caribbean-Asian fusion) or an à la carte restaurant at your all-inclusive. Early night again; tomorrow can be another active day depending on which Day 4 option you pick.

Pick one based on mood. Option A: horseback ride on Playa Macao, a rugged, undeveloped beach 25 minutes north of Bávaro. Half-day tours ($55 to $85) run along the cliffs and empty sand, with a swim break at the end. Option B: snorkel at Isla Catalina, a small coral island off La Romana with some of the clearest water in the country. This is a longer day (7:00am pickup, 7:00pm return) and costs $95 to $140.

Horseback tours end by 1:00pm, so you are back at the resort for lunch and a pool afternoon. The Catalina trip runs the whole day with lunch on the island. If you did horseback, consider a sunset catamaran cruise from Bávaro Beach ($65 to $90) to squeeze in one more water experience.

Dinner is your call. Splurge at La Yola (on stilts over the water at Puntacana Resort Marina) if you want a special meal, or go casual at Boca Yate. Book La Yola 2 to 3 days ahead; it fills up fast.

No alarms. Sleep in, order breakfast to the balcony if your resort offers it, and get one more hour on the sand. Check-out is usually 11:00am or noon; most resorts will hold luggage and let you use the pool and showers until your transfer.

Light lunch at the resort around 1:00pm, then a final walk down the beach for photos. The PUJ airport is small and pleasant but lines at check-in can be 30 to 45 minutes during peak times, so aim to arrive 3 hours before an international flight.
