Freshwater river pools cascading into the Caribbean
Playa San Rafael is a unique beach near Barahona where a cold freshwater river flows directly into the warm Caribbean Sea. This creates natural swimming pools of mixed fresh and saltwater, surrounded by smooth river rocks and lush tropical vegetation.
The beach is small but incredibly charming, tucked into a rocky cove with the river cascading down through a series of natural pools before meeting the ocean. It is one of the most photographed and visited beaches on the entire southern coast.
