Arrive SDQ, pick up car, quick Zona Colonial orientation
Land at Las Américas International (SDQ). Clear immigration, grab bags, and head to the rental counter. If your flight lands before noon, you'll have time for the Zona Colonial today; if it's late afternoon, save it for the morning of Day 2 and just head to your hotel to sleep.
Drive from SDQ to Zona Colonial is 25 to 35 minutes (30 km). Skip the toll bypass on arrival day; the coastal Avenida España route is slower but less stressful while you adjust to Dominican driving.
Check into a guesthouse inside or beside the Zona Colonial. It's compact, walkable, and packs 500 years of Spanish colonial architecture into about 10 blocks. Walk the Calle Las Damas (the first paved street in the Americas), see the Alcázar de Colón, and sit in Parque Colón with a cold Presidente.
If you have energy left, add the Colonial Zone Walking Tour. It's a light introduction that contextualizes what you'll see for the next ten days.
Dinner on a Calle El Conde side street. Try a sancocho (the national stew) or grilled chivo (goat). Early night; tomorrow is a mountain drive.
Airport snacks on arrival; one colonial-zone dinner (15 to 25 USD).
Rental car pickup at SDQ. Drive to Zona Colonial: 30 km, 30 to 45 min with traffic.
~$180 per person
- Park in a paid lot (100 to 150 DOP/hour), not on the street.
- The Zona Colonial is safe during the day; stick to lit main streets after 10 pm.
- Most cathedral interiors require knees and shoulders covered.
